Pond cleaning and rebalancing
Clear water is a balance problem, not a chemical problem.
Green water and blanketweed are symptoms. They tell you the pond is carrying more nutrient than its planting and filtration can use up, usually with plenty of light to go with it. Dosing it week after week treats the colour and leaves the cause exactly where it was. We clean the pond out properly, then correct the thing that let it happen.
Signs this is what you are looking at
- Water gone pea green, often within days of warm weather
- Blanketweed you can pull out in handfuls, growing back within a fortnight
- A soft layer of silt on the bottom that clouds the water when disturbed
- Treatments that work for a week or two, then stop working at all
We do not empty ponds for the sake of it
A full drain-down strips the bacteria doing the invisible work and stresses every fish in the pond. Most ponds need the silt reduced, the filter serviced and the balance corrected, which we can do with the pond largely intact. When the silt load or a liner repair genuinely needs the water out, we say so and we hold the fish in oxygenated pond water while we work.
The clean is the easy half
Getting a pond clear once is straightforward. Keeping it clear is about matching filtration to the volume, keeping the nutrient load down and having enough of the right planting to compete with the algae. That is what we talk you through afterwards, and it is why most people move onto a maintenance schedule once they have seen the difference.

- Filter media stripped, cleaned in pond water and put back live
