Pumps, filters and system upgrades
Sized properly, a pond system is close to invisible.
A pump that keeps clogging, a filter you are cleaning every week, or a system that never quite keeps up is usually undersized rather than broken. Pond kit is often bought for the pond someone thought they had, then never revisited when the fish grew or the stocking went up. Getting it right removes a job from your week and a running cost from your bill.
Signs this is what you are looking at
- The pump blocks constantly, or has to be lifted and rinsed weekly
- The filter is cleaned far more often than the maker suggests
- Water clears for a few days after every service, then goes again
- Running costs that look high for the size of the pond
Turnover is the number that matters
A general rule is the whole volume through the filter roughly every two hours, and rather faster for a stocked koi system. Plenty of ponds are running at half that with a pump straining to do it. Correcting the sizing usually cuts both the maintenance and the electricity, because a right-sized pump on a sensible head works far less hard than an undersized one flat out.
Upgrades, not replacements, where we can
If the existing filter body is sound, new media, a correctly matched pump and a working UV will often transform it. We will always price the upgrade alongside the replacement and tell you which one we would fit at our own house.
